Who we are

The coaches at CrossFit 605 have a wealth of experience and knowledge in overall fitness, physical assessment, individualised programming and nutrition as well as CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting. Experts in their field, our friendly and approachable coaches will help you reach your fitness goals.

Paul Smith – Coach

Occupation: Coach
Started CrossFit: 2007
Started coaching: 2011
Sports: Rugby, CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting
Favourite food: Fish and chips
Qualifications: OPEX CCP Level 1 Assessment,Program Design, Nutrition and Life Coaching and Business Systems, CrossFit level 1 (over 6 years coaching experience) and movement and mobilty trainer, BWLA level 2 – club coach and accredited course tutor, Precision Nutrition certified coach, Concept 2 rowing instructor, NVQ level 2 gym instructor, FPOS (first aid).

Paul says, “I get the chance to work with a wide range of people, from top competitive athletes to those just starting their fitness journey. The most rewarding part of my role is seeing how, with hard work and good coaching, our 605 members reach and surpass their fitness goals and develop both physically and mentally.”

James Grogan – Coach

Occupation: Full time coach and personal trainer
Started CrossFit: 2010
Started coaching: 2012
Sports: Hockey, cycling, triathlon and spike ball
Favourite food: Chocolate
Qualifications: Opex CCP Level 1 Coach, OPEX Assessment, Program Design and Life Coaching, Nutriton and Business Systems CrossFit – levels  (6 years coaching experience), Olympic Weightlifting trainer, BWLA level 1&2 – Club Coach and Course Tutor, Precision Nutrition certified coach, Qualified Sports Therapist and Movement specialist.

Manu Illescas – Coach

 Maddie Fry- Coach

Occupation: Artistic Gymnastics and CrossFit coach
Started CrossFit: 2015
Joined CrossFit 605: 2017
Sports: Artistic Gymnastics, Olympic Weightlifting
Qualifications: Artistic gymnastics L3, CrossFit Level 1, BWL Level 1 and 2.

Hailing from Nailsea, Bristol, Maddie says…

“Having been involved in sport for most of my life, I enjoy helping others see why exercise can be fun. I also love seeing how excited people get when they achieve something new, whether its a PB snatch or doing a handstand for the first time.”
